Do you need lighting solutions for rooms in your home? While several options exist, you should certainly consider fluorescent lighting. Although this type of lighting has been around a while, it still provides several benefits. Yes, it also includes some drawbacks, but you can address them with some simple solutions.
Benefits of Fluorescent Lights
The biggest benefit of using fluorescent light bulbs is that they are energy efficient and use about 25% less energy in comparison to regular incandescent light bulbs. Also, fluorescent light bulbs last on average 4 - 10 times longer than regular bulbs.
Another benefit of fluorescent lighting is somewhat related to the energy savings that it provides. Depending on the type of bulb that you choose, the bulbs will pay for themselves within about 3-12 months. Since it's likely that you'll be living in the same place after that time frame, this makes the cost effectiveness of fluorescent light bulbs worthwhile for most homeowners and renters.
Another big advantage is that fluorescent lighting made today is also compatible with your eyes and won't cause any strain. This is especially beneficial for those that like to read. The lights also don't become hot and this means they are safe to touch and even children won't be harmed if they come into contact with a fluorescent light by accident. On top of that, fluorescent lights also are quiet and don't make any annoying noises.
For those who are concerned about the environment you need to know that the choice of light bulb does make a difference when it comes to wasting less of Earth's resources. This is where you will be elated that fluorescent lighting uses far less than the incandescent type.
Another major benefit of fluorescent lighting is one of convenience. There's the obvious benefit that you'll need to replace the light bulb less frequently than with incandescent bulbs. That means that you can avoid spending a lot of time pulling out a stool, performing a balancing act on the stool, and then changing the bulb. And the new Compact Florescent Lights (CFL) screw into the majority of standard light fixtures!
Drawbacks of Fluorescent Lights
Although fluorescent lighting provides several benefits worth considering, you should also consider a few drawbacks. Fluorescent light bulbs tend to cost more initially than incandescent light bulbs. However, remember that fluorescent light bulbs will pay for themselves within time, due to the substantial energy savings that you'll experience. So as long as you plan to stay in the same home for about 3-12 months, fluorescent lighting is a wise investment.
Secondly, fluorescent light bulbs contain a small trace of mercury, so it's highly advisable to recycle them, to help preserve the Earth. Take them to a recycle center yourself, or return them to the store where you purchased them, for recycling.
There are things that were formally drawbacks but no longer are due to improvements. The original ones were known to flicker, were slow to warm up, made buzzing sounds and emitted a yellowish hue.
In the end when you purchase your fluorescent lighting you will be pleased how for a little extra cost, which will be returned in the end, you will have an energy efficient and environmentally friendly way to light up your home.
