Dr. Jean Houston is respected world-wide for her work as a consultant/advisor to the United Nations, the Dalai Lama, past presidents and first ladies, corporations, and many government agencies. She is a past president of the Association of Humanistic Psychology, and she has spoken at colleges around the world.
Jean founded the Foundation for Mind Research more than 40 years ago along with her husband, Dr. Robert Masters. Also more than 25 years ago, she founded The Mystery School. The school strives to teach all aspects of spiritual and mystic studies, and Jean remains a principal teacher there today.
Some of Dr. Houstons 25 published books include Jump Time, A Mythic Life: Learning to Live Our Greater Story, The Search for the Beloved, Mystical Dogs: Animals as Guides to Our Inner Life, and Women of Wisdom: Empowering the Dreams and Spirit of Women.
Jean Houston began her lifes journey differently than most children. At age 12, she had already been to over 20 schools across America. Of course, schools in the 1940-1950 era were drastically different from todays schools. Mississippi was nothing like Minnesota.
The reason for Dr. Houstons extensive travel during childhood was her fathers profession as a comedy writer. He wrote for celebrities like Bob Hope. Jean would occasionally attend the same school twice, and she began to notice that the fire for knowledge in young childrens eyes was missing or dimmed in older childrens eyes. She longed to change that.
Two experiences played a major role in shaping Jean Houstons life. Without them, who knows where she would be today? First, she recalls an encounter with a ventriloquist, Edgar Bergen, and his dummy, Charlie McCarthy. Edgar many times would ask Charlie questions like, What is love? and What is the meaning of life?
What caught Jeans attention was the conversation her father had with Edgar. Edgar knew that everything Charlie said was coming from his brain (because Charlie isnt real), but he still insisted that he had no idea what Charlie would say until he said it. It was like another brilliant dimension of reality.
A visit with Helen Keller is the second experience that would help shape Jeans future. As most people know, Helen was born both blind and deaf. She overcame this disability with the help of a loyal teacher. When asked how she could possibly be so happy, Keller told Jean that she lived each day as if it would be her last. Life and all of its moments are so full of glory.
